My Lord Duke,

I have the honor of most humbly submitting for Your Grace's Consideration the following detail in reference to certain transactions that have lately occurred in The Harbor Master's Department and which have Consequently called forth the Letter from the Honorable Colonial Secretary, a Copy of which I deferentially beg to enclose!

In the first instance I would beg respectfully to intimate to Your Grace that the period of my appointment in the Harbor Master's Department dates from the 14th day of October 1855.

During the early part of March 1858, in Consequence of a very severe attack of illness (produced partly from over anxiety for the efficient discharge of
